Review...

A gazetteer of the Peak District. There is an extensive general introduction giving wide-ranging information on the history, geology, outdoor pursuits, wildlife habitats, customs and festivals, culture and more. There are lists such as ‘10...Peak District Historical Highlights’ and ‘10.. Peak district film and television locations’.

The list ‘10... places to  avoid in the Peak District’ is perhaps open to debate: For instance - What’s wrong with Castleton at Christmas? OK it might be busy, but so is any town at that tim eof year. Longdendale has its own beauty and a lot of people enjoy the buzz of Matlock Bath on a summer Sunday. The rest of the book is taken up by the main guide. The Peak District is split into five geographic areas. There are suggestions as to what to see and do, ‘the ‘best’ places to stay, to eat, etc. Wet weather alternative ideas are given, activities for children, ‘unmissable’ attractions, farmers’ markets and much more. The book is enhanced with colour and black and white photos, as well as area and town maps. As with all books of this kind the ‘best of’ element is subjective and some of the information supplied will go out of date. That said, it’s a well-written and worthwhile addition to any bookshelf.
